Dozens of automakers are working on self-driving car technology. None, however, will say when exactly the tech will be ready for the open road. Except Elon Musk.
The Tesla CEO said his company is just two years away from full autonomous driving, according to a report published this week.
“We’re going to end up with complete autonomy, and I think we will have complete autonomy in approximately two years,” Musk said in an interview with Fortune.
He went on to say that most of the necessary elements are there, but they need to be refined to work across a variety of environments. While it may only be two years until Tesla produces a fully self-driving car, it may take one to five years —or even more depending on jurisdictions— before one can hit the road due to the slow pace of regulation.
